The Michigan State Senate passed a bill today banning smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces. It still has to go through the House, where it will apparently face a hurdle in dealing with the casinos.
This is crap. While I don’t like smoke any more than the next guy, this is something that the free market could have decided. Its simple – if restaurant A allows smoking, and restaurant B doesn’t, you’ll either go to A or B, depending on your preference, and the market will dictate which survives based on the demand. If you’re someone who dislikes smoking in restaurants, yet still patronizes those very restaurants, well then its not really that big of a deal to you, now is it? I can guarantee that if enough people refused to go to restaurant A, and informed them as to why, they would change their policy accordingly.
Regardless, its interesting to see the trend toward smoke-free establishments.
